While Paul Ofalea was a college student he earned himself the name "Kinko." He insists the nickname refers to his kinky red hair. After he graduated, Kinko borrowed enough money to open a small photocopy shop near the University of California at Santa Barbara. The shop was located in the corner of a building that also housed a hamburger stand, which allowed him to cut a hole in the connecting wall and order lunch without leaving the store. This innovation demonstrates his love of efficiency. The decision to keep Kinko's Copy Shops open 24 hours a day to serve those who need to make copies at 3 A.m. allowed the company to grow until it seems like there are Kinkos on every suburban corner.
