The girl in Buddy Holly's song "Peggy Sue" and the sequel "Peggy Sue Got Married was a real person. And she did get married. When Holly brought a new song he had written called "Cindy Lou" into the studio, his good friend and drummer, Jerry Allison, asked him if he would change the name to Peggy Sue. Allison had a girlfriend named Peggy Sue, and he said he was going to marry her.
The title was changed and the song shot to number 3 on the charts. Jerry and Peggy got married. Buddy Holly's dad suggested a sequel, and "Peggy Sue Got Married" was recorded. The name apparently struck a chord with other musicians, and Peggy Sues began to pop up in other songs, including Bobby Darrin's "Splish Splash" and the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann."
