An Italian soldier with an eye for the ladies, he had a vision while sick and imprisoned telling him to get rid of his possessions and do good deeds. When he followed his vision, his father disinherited him. He went on to preach and to help the less fortunate. He was canonized in 1228, two years after his death. In 1980, the pope named him the patron saint of ecologists.
