Evanescence - Fallen
by Jody B. 7/9/2003
Evanescence is a new band that most likely will truly change the face of music in this new year by reviving piano and rock fused together with overpowering lyrics and vocals.
The debut album, Fallen, brings together all the grittiness of modern hard rock but also meshes together the symphonic elements of classical music for an album that stands at the pinnacle of a new wave and defines a totally new genre of music.
"Going Under" opens the album with a very dark tone but crashes louder too with gritty guitars and crashing drums throughout the chorus...very strong start. "Bring Me To Life" features the vocals of a 12 Stones singer layered over a very strong guitar lead and Amy's strong passionate vocals, making it a perfect breakout single for the album. "Everybody's Fool" follows suit in the rock vein but keeps strong lyrics and the pace as well. "My Immortal" is the best song ever written or recorded but especially this new version appearing on Fallen...the piano tone and the violas in the background create a very melancholy backdrop to very poignant and sad lyrics...beautifully haunting and passionate and the best song I've probably ever heard in my life both lyrically and musically.
"Haunted" follows eerily but the pulsating of the track makes it cutting edge and innovative...nothing like this exists anywhere in the musical market today and the ghostly tone of the lyrics makes it truly haunting. "Tourniquet" is a cover song but nonetheless better than the original and a good song leading off of a strong mid-section on the album. "Imaginary" makes another appearance but this time with the aid of violins and violas littered throughout the track coupled with gritty guitars...a combination usually not imagined possible but pulled off wonderfully like something from imagination coming to life.
"Taking Over Me" is an excellent track but seems out of place at the end of the album because it seems to take more from the stream at the beginning of the album...nonetheless, it's still a great song. "Hello" is another very dark song on the album but it's very poignant and passionate...Amy's vocals start of slowly and low but increase with intensity as the song progresses while cascading over the piano accompaniment. "My Last Breath" is an excellent song to lead towards the end of the album with great lyrics as well. "Whisper" appears as the closing track to the album and the violin solo at the end makes it absolutely amazing and memorable along with great lyrics and the album seems to end too soon.
Fallen is a record that truly changes the course of modern music with its intense passion lyrically and musically but it also fuses together the elements of hard rock and classical accompaniment that truly make this album a masterpiece in itself.
